Aeneas Wilder built a gargantuan structure that consisted of 10,000 uniform pieces of Iroko wood. "By limiting the creative act to one simple material, in ample supply, with clearly defined parameters (no fixing, no joining, no additional materials, only balance and gravity allowed for the construction process) a door opens into a wholly unexplored creative territory," the artist told Yorkshire.
The sculpture, called Untitled # 155, was the first major UK installation by Aeneas Wilder, conceived specifically for the Gallery.
The artist carefully constructed this work to challenge himself in an architectural space, exploring what the possibilities are for creating sculptures and structures within certain boundaries. The "seemingly" safe structure was "one that [was] loaded with the potential energy of collapse.
